The NRI Indian Diet: Eat Indian, Stay Fit Abroad

Living in Canada, US, UK, Australia or the Middle East? You can eat your dal, sabzi, roti and paneer — and still lose fat. Here is the exact framework we use with our overseas Indian clients.

The NRI Indian Diet: Eat Indian, Stay Fit Abroad
Every second Indian household abroad has ghee, atta, paneer and dal in the fridge — and that is not the problem. The problem is portion timing, macro pairing and grocery-store swaps. After 4 years of working with Indian NRIs across Canada, US, UK, Australia and the Gulf, here's the framework that actually works. THE 5 MISTAKES EVERY NRI INDIAN MAKES 1. Eating dinner at 10 PM (foreign work hours + late-night Indian TV = weight gain). 2. Making roti with 100% white all-purpose flour from big-box stores. 3. 3 cups of chai daily with 2 tsp sugar each = 500 empty calories. 4. Weekend community potlucks and temple langar without adjusting the weekday intake. 5. Zero vegetable intake between October and March (winter diet stays winter — even indoors in a heated Western home). THE FIX: A 7-DAY FRAMEWORK MORNING (7-8 AM, before commute) • 1 glass warm water + 1 tsp methi seed powder (soaked overnight) • 2 boiled eggs OR 1 bowl sprouted moong chaat • 1 cup masala chai — with ½ tsp brown sugar or stevia. Not skipped. Just downgraded. LUNCH (12-1 PM, work desk or car) • 2 multigrain rotis (multigrain atta OR homemade 3-flour mix: whole wheat + besan + jowar) • 1 katori dal + 1 katori sabzi (mix veg or seasonal saag) • Salad plate: onion, cucumber, radish, lemon — mandatory • 1 glass buttermilk (chaas) EVENING (5-6 PM) • Handful of roasted chana + almonds (from any Indian grocer — Patel Brothers in US, Fruiticana in Canada, Sri Ganapathy in Australia, Lulu / Al Adil in the Middle East) • 1 apple OR 1 orange DINNER (7-8 PM — NOT 10 PM) • 1 roti + palak paneer / dal / kadhi / any seasonal sabzi • Big bowl of cucumber-tomato salad • No rice at dinner (weekdays) • Weekend: 1 fistful of basmati rice with rajma / chole / sambar / rasam allowed GROCERY MAPPING BY COUNTRY • Canada: Fruiticana / Sabzi Mandi (fresh Indian veg), Costco (oats, almonds, eggs, Greek yogurt) • USA: Patel Brothers / H-Mart (Indian veg, atta), Trader Joe's / Whole Foods (proteins, greens) • UK: Sainsbury's, Asian stores, Tesco (paneer, dals, atta) • Australia: Coles / Woolworths + Sri Ganapathy / Bharat Bazaar • Middle East: Lulu / Carrefour / Al Adil (full Indian grocery available) SHIFT WORKERS & PROFESSIONALS ON THE MOVE If your shift is 8 PM - 6 AM, invert this schedule. Your 'lunch' is your 3 AM meal — same food, same rules. See our night-shift guide. REAL RESULTS FROM OUR NRI CLIENTS • Simran, Brampton: 8 kg down in 4 months, never gave up rotis. • Aditya, Dallas: 14 kg down, BP under control in 6 months. • Ananya, Bangalore → moved to London: PCOS-friendly plan, 6 kg down + regular periods in 5 months. The point is not to abandon Indian food. The point is to keep it — and just move a few pieces around. Book a free consultation to get your own 7-day plan mapped to your local grocery store.
